The Carton collection, consisting of vases, jugs and teapots, is more than just an aesthetic experiment. According to the author, this collection is a commentary on our world of overproduction and excessive consumption.
I've always been very sensitive to things that time destroys, things that don't last long – Jacques Monnero, creator of the Cardboard ceramic collection.
To achieve an extremely realistic look, the artist used a unique technique of combining three types of porcelain stoneware. Thanks to this, its ceramics accurately convey the texture and color of cardboard, which is the result of long and methodical experiments.
Although at first glance the items from the Carton collection look like quickly glued together cardboard and tape, their production is a process that requires incredible precision and patience. Each element takes about a year and a half to completewhich shows the artist's great commitment to every detail.
An interesting aspect of this collection is also the contrast between the appearance and functionality of the items. Even though they look like they might fall apart when exposed to water, they are fully functional and waterproof.
When a drop runs down the sides, we get the feeling that the whole object is decomposing, and water is flooding the room. The contrast between a cardboard object filled with water is striking. – Jacques Monnero, creator of the Carton ceramic collection
Carefully designed details of each art are designed to " freeze fragility” and make the audience think about transience and durability. Monero is fascinated by the idea that items that look like disposable items can last for thousands of years if they are made of ceramic.
If someone had hidden one of my creations, it might still be on Earth in 3,000 years. – Jacques Monnero, creator of the Carton ceramic collection
The artist's previous works have included egg glasses, butter bottles, and bowls, but it is the Carton collection that seems to be his most ambitious and innovative project. The ceramist is not going to slow down and plans to continue developing his collection by exploring new shapes and creating even bigger vases.
With his unique approach and relentless passion, Monero is sure to surprise the art world more than once. The Carton collection is proof that even in an old field like ceramics, you can still innovate and surprise your audience with innovative ideas.
